MCP Made Simple

How AI assistants connect to your email, calendar, documents, and business tools — explained for everyone, with interactive simulations.

The Problem MCP Solves

AI assistants like Claude are incredibly smart — but out of the box, they can't see your email, your calendar, your spreadsheets, or your company files. They're stuck in a bubble.

Without MCP

  • You copy-paste emails into Claude manually
  • You describe your calendar instead of sharing it
  • You download spreadsheets and upload them
  • Every tool needs its own special integration
  • 5 AI apps × 10 tools = 50 custom connectors

With MCP

  • Claude reads your email directly
  • Claude checks your calendar in real-time
  • Claude queries spreadsheet data live
  • One universal plug for all tools
  • 5 AI apps + 10 tools = 15 simple adapters
Think of it this way: Before USB-C, every phone had a different charger — one for Samsung, one for iPhone, one for your tablet. MCP is like USB-C for AI: one standard plug that connects any AI assistant to any tool.

How It Works — The Big Picture

There are only 3 players. Everything in MCP is one of these three things.

🧑

Host

The AI app you're using. Claude Desktop, a customer support chatbot, or a business assistant. It's the "front door" you interact with.

📧

Client

An invisible messenger inside the app. It talks to one service at a time. Think of it as a dedicated phone line between the app and a tool.

⚙️

Server

A small connector that plugs into a specific tool — Gmail, Google Calendar, Salesforce, your company's files. It does the actual fetching and sending.

🧑 You ask a question

📧 Messenger sends the request
⚙️ Connector gets data & replies
Restaurant analogy: You (customer) tell the waiter (AI assistant) what you want. The waiter writes a ticket (messenger) and sends it to the kitchen (connector). The kitchen makes the dish (fetches your data) and sends it back to your table.

What Can MCP Connectors Do?

Connectors offer 3 types of capabilities to AI. Think of them as items on a restaurant menu.

🔧 Tools (Actions)

Things the AI can do on your behalf. Like "send an email", "create a calendar event", "update a CRM record", or "post a message in Slack." You always approve before it acts.

📄 Resources (Data)

Information the AI can read. Your inbox, spreadsheet data, customer records, meeting notes. It's read-only access — the AI can look but not touch.

📝 Prompts (Templates)

Pre-made workflows for common tasks. Like "summarize today's emails", "prepare meeting notes", or "draft a customer follow-up." You pick them from a menu.

🔁 Sampling (Asking Back)

The connector can ask the AI to think. Like the kitchen asking the waiter "should this be formal or casual?" Enables smarter, multi-step workflows.

How Do They Actually Talk?

Two ways the AI and its connectors communicate. Think phone call vs walkie-talkie.

💻 Local (Same Computer)

The connector runs right on your computer. Like two coworkers sitting at the same desk — they just pass notes back and forth. Super fast, no internet needed. Great for reading your local files or documents.

🌐 Remote (Over the Internet)

The connector runs on a server somewhere. Like a phone call to another office. Works with cloud services like Gmail, Salesforce, Slack. You log in once and it stays connected.

Both speak the same language. Whether local or remote, the messages are identical. It's like two people who both speak English — one is in the same room, the other is on the phone. The conversation itself is exactly the same.

What About Security?

Your data is sensitive. MCP was designed with safety built in from day one.

🔒 You Approve Every Action

Before Claude sends an email or creates a meeting, it shows you exactly what it wants to do. You click "Allow" or "Deny." No surprises, ever.

🔐 Secure Login

Connecting to cloud services uses the same secure login you already use (OAuth). You sign in through the official service — the AI never sees your password.

👁 Need-to-Know Access

Each connector only sees what it needs. The email connector can't read your files. The calendar connector can't see your CRM. Everything is isolated.

🛡 Connectors Can't See Each Other

Your Gmail connector and your Salesforce connector are completely separate. They can't intercept each other's data or pretend to be each other.

Real-World Use Cases

Here's how real people use MCP every day — no coding required.

📨 Email Management

"Summarize my unread emails." "Draft a reply to the Johnson proposal." "Find all emails from Acme Corp about the Q3 contract." Claude reads and writes emails directly.

📅 Calendar & Scheduling

"What's my day look like tomorrow?" "Schedule a 30-min meeting with Sarah next week." "Find a free slot for our team standup." Claude checks your real calendar.

💼 Sales & CRM

"How many deals closed this month?" "Show me the Acme Corp account history." "Update the Johnson deal stage to 'Negotiation'." Claude talks to Salesforce, HubSpot, etc.

💬 Team Communication

"Post the weekly summary in #marketing." "What did the team discuss in #product today?" Claude reads and posts to Slack and Teams.

📊 Data & Reports

"What were last quarter's sales by region?" "Create a chart from our expenses spreadsheet." Claude connects to Google Sheets, Excel, databases, and BI tools.

📚 Knowledge & Documents

"Find our refund policy in the company wiki." "Summarize the Q4 board deck." Claude searches Notion, Google Drive, SharePoint, and internal docs.

TL;DR

MCP is a universal plug that lets any AI app talk to any tool — email, calendar, CRM, documents, spreadsheets, chat.

Three players: the AI app you use (Host), an invisible messenger (Client), and a connector to each tool (Server).

Connectors offer: Actions (send email), Data (read spreadsheet), and Templates (summarize my day).

Works locally or over the internet. Same conversation, two delivery methods.

You're always in control. Every action needs your approval. Your data stays secure and isolated.
